ONAM STYLE

Outfits in traditional white-and-gold, boat races, lively music and dance and delicious sadhya meals, the festival of Onam hits all our sweet spots. One of Kerala’s most important celebrations, this is also an occasion to dress up in your very best. And no, you don’t have to belong to God’s Own Country to take a leaf out of their festival and make it your own! Go ahead, take a cue from the traditional Kerala hues, and the season’s biggest festive trends, to celebrate and enjoy the occasion whether you are in Bangalore, Hyderabad or Delhi!

India is the land of festivals, and no season shows its celebratory side more than autumn-winter. Every state boasts its own festivals, and Kerala is gearing up for one of its biggest celebrations, Onam.

It’s not just the Malayalis who celebrate this harvest festival. The local music, dance and lip-smacking delicacies—avial, anyone?—have fans around India. You may celebrate with friends or make the most of the festival on your own. To add that special touch why not dress ‘local’ for the occasion?

White is an auspicious colour in Kerala - the Kasavu Saree is a familiar sight on festivals. You don’t have to don a saree but join the festive fashion brigade with white and gold outfits of choice. Add a hint of traditional red to your ensemble, and you are better than the manor born!

With fusion silhouettes on fleek, take the offbeat route and wear a desi-inspired outfit for the festivals this year. Ditch heavy lehengas for airy skirt sets or pick from a bevy of brightly-hued dresses sprinkled with intricate motifs and zardozi. Accessorize with ethnic jewels and flowers in your hair.

Men wear the customary mundu on festivals like Onam. But for a more effortless statement, swap the traditional ensemble for a crisp white kurta-pyjama set and still be a sartorial fit.

Not feeling the ethnic vibe? Wear your formals, but offset your regular muted staples with eye-catching colours. A bright shirt can elevate the most basic khaki pants.

Then, there are the little festival-goers, dressed in vibrant ethnic wear – they make for an adorable sight. Dress up your family and head out in time for some Onam Sadhya.
