Wear the Trend

The trends this season are neutral shades, stripes, metallics and puffs and ruffles, to name a few. Our expert brings them to your wardrobe with some tips

It’s the Catch 22 of fashion: Love what we see on the runways but don’t know how to make them work in day-to-day wear. To make the task a tiny bit simpler, here are five runway trends that can be incorporated in your wardrobe without burning a hole in the pocket.

1. Go Neutral

Colour blocking seems to have given way to single colour or tonal outfits in the Spring Summer 2017 collections of many designers at the New York Fashion Week. Tibi, Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham, Prabal Gurung and many others had noticeable all-white or full outfits in the same neutral colour. So, go ahead and wear your white blazer with white pants and white top. It’s trending this season.

2. Stripes

With every runway, right from Dior to Alexander Wang to J Crew featuring stripes, it is safe to assume that this season is going to be a riot of stripes in primary colours. And we love that this runway favourite is such a low-cost trend to appropriate. Go crazy with striped shirts, cute skirts and pants in bright, bold colours this season.

3. Metallics

Metallics is no longer treated with caution, only to be brought out in the night. While an all-metallic outfit might still not be the best sartorial choice, Carolina Herrera, Erin Fetherston, Kye, Tome and many others are big on metallics this season. Take your everyday fashion up a bold and eye-catching notch by wearing a metallic skirt, jacket or bag every once in a while.

4. Genderless

Oversized, almost androgynous clothing continues to be a favoured trend this season. Large, boyish white shirts made prominent appearances in Anthony Vaccerello and Vera Wang’s collections. Rough, oversized denim shirts, the classic white shirt and jackets with masculine detailing are the best way to incorporate this look into your daily wardrobe.

5. Statement sleeves

For the second year in a row, the focus is on exaggerated sleeves—from Marc Jacobs to Marques Almeida and Gucci, every designer had outfits that were all about dramatic sleeves. We love Loewe’s super-long sleeves, Celine’s deconstructed sleeves, Hermes, Rag & Bone and Kenzo’s wide sleeves, Oscar De La Renta, Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana and Simone Rocha’s ruched up, ultra glam statement sleeves and the lovely puffed sleeves in Erden’s collection at London Fashion Week. In Spring 2017, expect to see some seriously well-clad arms.

6. Athleisure

Who says Fashion Weeks and Runways are all about glamour and no functionality? Athleisure, or active wear, was big at the London and Milan Fashion Weeks this year and it’s only getting bigger. Donatella Versace called it “the future of fashion” and added tracksuit joggers to her feminist collection. Beyonce, Rihanna and Carrie Underwood all have their personal athleisure lines of clothing. Closer home, big names such as Anamika Khanna and Monisha Jaising have been major champions of the trend. So it’s safe to say that mixing gym wear with everyday clothes is no longer ‘anti’ fashion. Combine comfy jogger pants with formal shirts, stylish bomber jackets or trendy sweatshirts. Also hot are side satchels, sleek backpacks, zipper high tops and printed footwear.

7. Gothletic

Like the name suggests, gothleticis all about sporty gothic, inspired by Rihanna’s collaboration with Puma, Fenty X Puma. It is dominated by black and white in urban street wear, with emphasis on grommets and graphic prints. You can make this look your own with cropped crewneck sweaters, graphic white tees, thigh-high socks and, of course, major attitude!

8. Punk Grunge

It’s not a new trend but seems to have taken Paris and New York by storm, recently. While punk elements have always been a part of men’s clothing, this time even the women’s lines that are relying more on casual coolness than raw sex appeal. Remember Kendal Jenner walking the ramp for Michael Kors in the New York Fashion Week. Think luxe versions of old workwear—army fatigues, stonewashed jeans, windbreakers, oversized sweaters and plaid shirts. Make this trend yours by throwing on oversized shirts on your outfit. Glam it up with brooches and other chunky pins, badges and patches. If you’re feeling particularly daring, wear fishnet stocking under super ripped and baggy jeans.

9. Modern Military

Military inspired clothing has been a big trend globally since 2010 and it’s only evolved down the years.. This trend appropriates the uniform look, but in sharper, more sophisticated cuts. Cargo pants, double-breasted blazers and shirt dresses with badge details in brown and olive shades dominate the look, with plenty of detailing in the form of epaulets, brass buttons, belts and large pockets. Camo patterns are seen in a lot of variants; as are waterfall duster coats in shades of olive.
