New York Fashion Week July 10 - 13

Fashion Commentary

Making a comment - on politics, global warming and more - seemed to be top of mind for the designers at the New York Fashion Week 2017

Who says men’s fashion doesn’t have the same shine as women’s fashion? The New York Fashion Week was all about men’s fashion, with emerging and established designers showcasing their Spring Summer 2018 menswear collections.

And there was so much to look out for. From politics to climate change, fashion as a means of making a comment seemed to be on many designers’ minds this year. We saw nautical influences aplenty – underlining concerns about disappearing water bodies - in the form of light fabrics, unlined jackets, roomy Bermuda shorts. Who could have thought that suits and anoraks in easy, thin cotton and leather could be used to make a statement on climate change?

‘Dad fashion’ is having its moment too, with hoods, drainpipe trousers and boxy, oversized blazers. Street Style at NYFW, which is as much of a thing to watch out for as runway style, was all about cross body bags, fanny packs, man purses and sneakers.

The emphasis is on trousers this year, with most designers experimenting with off-kilter shapes and tailoring. We saw everything, from high-waist pleated trousers to loose, cropped ones in colours as sedate as sky blues and greys and as natty as mint greens, jewel tones and bright, citrusy ones.
