Bond Over Batik

It's that time of the year again. Raksha Bandhan is almost here, and while your sister is looking for a rakhi to show her love, it’s your turn to treat her too. Swap conventional gifts for a token of love inspired by our heritage and age-old crafts. Practised in India for two millennia, Batik is now getting a contemporary spin with offbeat silhouettes and chic designs. Wouldn’t you like to gift your sister an heirloom of her own? She will treasure these beautiful designs for years to come.

It’s that time of the year again! Raksha Bandhan is almost here, and while your sister is busy carefully choosing the perfect Rakhi for you, it’s on you to choose her a gift that’s different, not the same-old-same-old, and definitely not just an envelope with some notes thrust in! If you are stuck with ideas that are just rehashed versions of presents from previous years, fret not! Here’s something new she will totally love.

Clueless about Batik? Introduced into the country from Java (an Indonesian island), this fascinating wax-resist dyeing technique has been practised for close to 2000 years! Painstakingly crafted, intricate and colourful, wearing Batik is wearing a work of art.

Giving Batik a New-Age Spin

Batik is no longer restricted to wall hangings with
age-old ‘elephants-in-procession’ designs.... The art is now getting a contemporary spin and shows up as wearable art in offbeat silhouettes and chic designs. Bohemian maxi dresses, flowy off-shoulder numbers and layered ensembles, are all embellished with Batik to ensure the ensemble is on trend.

What makes Batik so special?

Batik is practised not just in India but also in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Nigeria and many other countries. The art was revived in India in the early 20th century, when Rabindranath Tagore introduced it as a subject in Shantikniketan. Indonesian Batik is designated by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Go ahead, gift your sister a piece of history!
