To The Goddess

'To me Goddess Durga epitomises the quintessential modern Indian woman - so strong, so feminine,' says Payal Puri. I do not generally wear Indian clothes, and being a Punjabi living in Delhi, I am not expected to go for the traditional ‘anjali’ or even step into a pandal to bow to the Goddess. Yet, there is something so compelling about the legend of Durga that each year, I find myself drawn to do at least one round of pandal-hopping enjoying the festivities, eating mutton chop (made the Bengali way) and of course, I wear Indian festive!

STRONG YET DEMURE
My inclination is for the long, flowy dress-kurtis with sleeves, (oh so charmingly demure) and nuances of detailing. Just love the feeling of all that fabric swirling around me luxuriously… a far cry from the sleek (spartan?) dresses that I don as my fashionable gear every morning when I get ready for the day. So come Durga Puja, it’s time to join the Bengali revellers and shop for new clothes (another excuse!) – afterall one’s got to respect tradition.

SWIRLS & FLOWS
Love this swirly sky blue number both for the beautiful flowering out of the skirt, as well as the intricate work on the top which adds just the right amount of dressiness to suit me. As does the gold embroidery on the midnight blue long dress-kurta, so beautifully offset by the nose ring. The attractive printed detail in the all-dark long dress-kurta too calls out to me for being just there and nowhere else, so arresting and interesting. For my pandal visits, I would choose the sky blue for the day and the other for the evening.
