Divine Refresh

Growing up in Assam, Manjira Dutta recalls the wondrous celebrations of Durga Puja… and the best part? The tradition of refreshing one’s wardrobe!

Durga Puja was quite the big happening of the year – and you didn’t have to be a Bengali to be carried away by the fervour of this delightful festival, so full of symbolism. From the purifying chants of Mahalaya, the aarti, the scent of dhuna, to the crescendo of Vijayadashami where the Goddess is bidden a ceremonial farewell for the year – it’s all abuzz with excitement.

The Free Spirit

Getting bored easily is a trait of mine. And it is evident from how frequently I change my hair colour and now even my lipstick shade. I like experimenting with things that are new to me, something that I don’t really familiarise myself with. Like this Boho look for example. I don’t categorise my style into the Bohemian sector but sometimes I like working on that field. For a change. Because Monotony makes life so mundane. Therefore, I created this look with Boho elements, at the same time incorporating my personal style by adding a sleeveless duster coat to this look.

To The Goddess

STRONG YET DEMURE
My inclination is for the long, flowy dress-kurtis with sleeves, (oh so charmingly demure) and nuances of detailing. So come Durga Puja, it’s time to join the Bengali revellers and shop for new clothes (another excuse!) – afterall one’s got to respect tradition.

The Vermillion Touch

Red is to Durga Puja what white is to a Christian wedding... The momentous occasion where Goddess Durga is said to have come down to earth to slay the demon Mahishasura, is epitomised by the brilliant hue, reflected in the bindi on the divinity, her attire and the red blood of the demon – signifying the triumph of good over evil. Women smear each other with sindoor, and red gulal fills the festive air. The colour is echoed in tikas, in saree borders, even in the brightly decorated shamianas hosting the Goddess and her children.

Metanoia

A couple of days ago we just celebrated the 70th year of Indian independence and with our Independence Day celebration, I saw a lot of people tweet about what Independence and Freedom means to them. Some of the tweets/posts were really good and that set me thinking about what does our Freedom really mean to me? There is nothing that restricts our thinking, our attitude anymore and we have all been brought up as free thinkers in an independent nation. And I thought, the way I like to cherish our independence would be doing what I love - Expressing myself in Fearless Fashion and exactly in the way I wanted to.
